Audrey Seguy Interview.

Here Audrey Seguy the Managing Director of The Castle Climbing Centre in London and former winner of the SIBL explains about her current role within the competition.

Full Name: Audrey Seguy

Job description: Managing Director of The Castle Climbing Centre

Your role within the SIBL (Route setter, sponsor, wall manager etc) Before the event I support the Chief Routesetter and Comps Organiser. I’m hoping to do some of the setting and testing as well this year. During the day I act as a liaison between The Castle and SIBL helping people with registrations and directions.

How many hours work does the SIBL involve for you? Probably 8-10 hours prior to the event.

Describe your role with regards to the SIBL. What’s involved: see above

How long have you been helping out with the SIBL: I first became involved with SIBL as a competitor and I won the series (back in 2003 I think). This gave me the confidence to enter national and international comps and now I’m the British Bouldering Champion and member of the British Team. I was disappointed in how SIBL was going in the years following that and have only become involved again since 2006.  I still enter some of the rounds (last year the British Team was at Mile End and I also went to The Westway’s round).

What is the best part of the SIBL for you? The best part of SIBL is when the event is when the registrations have been completed and the event is underway and people are having fun. We put a huge amount of effort into making last year’s round the best with some creative problem and good organisation.  My favourite problem last year was one wear climbers had to swing on Rock Rings (hanging grips) to get to the finish hold! I like that SIBL gives us a chance to introduce climbers to The Castle that might not have been here before.

What does your wall have to do on the day to be able to hold the event?: (any closures extra staff etc): The day before we start closing bouldering areas while we set, test and mark new problems. The day of the event we need to get extra staff in to help co-ordinate the event. We set up a café annexe in the Mezzanine level because the upstairs café gets so busy. We also have to cancel some of our courses because of lack of space. Finally, on the day most of our bouldering is closed off for SIBL competitors only.

How many staff at your wall get involved with the SIBL either before hand or during the event?: it’s difficult to count because this year we’ve also got the lecture and party which will require lots of volunteers to help out with.

How long does it take for you to set the routes for the SIBL?: one day.
