Gaz Parry Interview.

Here Gaz Parry talks about his competition career and his role within the 2009/10 SIBL series

Name: Gaz Parry

Job Description: Climber

Your role within this years sibl: Route Setter at the 2nd round and sponsor with my coaching company Epic Adventures.

How many hours work does the SIBL involve for you including any preparation:  Not really sure on the answer here as it is a long time since i set at the SIBL. It may be a late night to get all the setting done but i am sure it will be fun and well worth the effort for all the climbers that will be around on Sunday.

How did you start competition climbing; I climbed in the first ever indoor competition in the UK, It was called the Yorkshire Open and was in 1989. Ever since then i have been hooked.

What are your best achievements in competition climbing: British Boulder Champion, British Leading Champion, British Speed Climbing Champion, Arco Rockmaster, Interlaken Master, Norway Master, 3rd at the World Cup in Birmingham.

Do you still enter competitions yourself: Yes, not so many these days i always seem to have little time. Next year though i am hoping to do all the World Cup events.

Have you ever entered the SIBL; Yes we used a SIBL event as part of our team training a few seasons ago. We weren't allowed to post a result, which was fine. We were just there for fun and to climb some great problems.

Have you route set for competitions before, if so which one's: Yes a few. SIBL, Craggy Boulder Bash,

How long have you been competing: Since 1996. I climbed in the first UK comp, The Yorkshire Open. The same year i saw Jerry Moffat win at Leeds ´89, from then on i was hooked.

Whats your favourite part about competitions: Meeting new friends. I know people from all over the world through comps and have shared some great times with them. Winning comps is also very important for me, you have to really believe in yourself in order to perform at your best. Standing on the podium at a World Cup in front of a home crowd was a great feeling, but i still wanted to be on the top step.
